For those who don’t know, downtown Ocean Springs is known for its festivals, gourmet shops, and boutiques. A few weeks ago Stephanie and I drove into downtown to visit a specific gourmet shop and check out what they had. One thing to note is that this shop specializes in one specific gourmet food item that we wanted to know more about. I had never shopped at this store before, so I had no idea what to expect. Also, I didn’t really have any knowledge of the gourmet food item this shop specialized in.
Walking into the shop we were not immediately greeted, because the shop personnel were busy helping the only other customer in the store. After browsing for a few minutes we were finally greeted with, “Can I help you?” I quickly replied “we’ve never been here before, so I’m not really sure of what I’m looking at.” The shop worker (now I’ve learned is the owner) then replied, “okay”, then proceeded to make a personal phone call (I like to eavesdrop) and walk to the back of the shop. At this time Stephanie and I are the only ones left in the shop and were left to browse by ourselves. Even though we genuinely wanted to buy something; we had no one to help us, so we left empty handed.
Not ready to leave the downtown area, we walked around the corner to another gourmet shop that we had never be in. We didn’t really want anything from this shop, but we decided we’d go check out what they had. Immediately upon entering the shop we were greeted warmly by the two shop workers. After a few seconds one of the workers asked if we had any questions or needed help with anything. I then enquired about some items in the display case. The worker then began to tell me all about these items, and offered to let me sample anything that I wanted. Not being one to pass up free gourmet food; I took her up on the offer. She happily gave me as many samples as I desired and even made recommendations on what I should try. Before I knew it I was in the check out line with two items for me and Stephanie. On the way to the car I told Stephanie, “Going in to that shop I really didn’t want anything, but they sold me.”
Here’s the point. People walk into our churches and organizations on a weekly basis with wants, needs, and desires. It’s our job to sell it! If not, then they’ll just go around the corner and be sold on something they don’t even want or need.
There’s maybe even a deeper issue here. You done even believe in what you’re supposed to be selling. If this is the case, then I challenge you to buy in or get out, now!
So buy in, sell it and sell out.
God bless and bless God,
Tony
